Is Christianity an idol in your life?

Yesterday I was talking with my mom about how just because you're "religious" does not mean that you are better than those who are worldly. Let me explain a little more.

If you are so caught up in the specifics in Christianity that you forget the "Christ" part then you might as well call it Xanity which could also be seen as INSanity. That was kind of corny, I know. But you get the point. Christian ethics and what not are great and wonderful but not the point.

My definition of Christianity is that you see yourself as inadequate to be near a perfect, higher power (also known as God, Yahweh, Lord, Heavenly Father) than you. Therefore this higher power sent a part of itself in human form (also known as Jesus, Christ, Savior, Messiah) to live a perfect life but die an unjust death. Of course he stayed dead for three days, he had the literal weight of the world on him. But he still didn't stay dead because he is more powerful than death. Therefore, you believe that this substitution can allow you to be near the only perfect being in existence and you are set free from death and from the imperfections that holds you down and you see the bigger, better plan for the breath that you were given and you try to spread love and peace and you are filled with pure and holy joy (or as some people like to call it, the holy spirit). Because of this joy and this new viewpoint on life, you try not to make mistakes that hurt yourself and hurt other people (or as some people like to call it, sin).

Don't get so caught up in the specifics that you forget the Gospel. I think that the specifics are important, but if it hinders you from loving God or loving people, then something is wrong and those specifics have become an idol. Jesus, himself, said that the two most important things are to love God and to love people. Don't you think he knows a little more than we do?
